“The indifference is more guilty than violence itself. It is the moral apathy of those who turn away. It happens even today towards all the horrors of the world. And memory is the only vaccine against indifference” (Liliana Segre).
On January 27, 1945, Soviet soldiers arrived in Auschwitz in southern Poland and entered the German concentration camp, freeing the prisoners. On this date we want to remember the victims of Nazism, of the fascist racial laws and all those who opposed and helped the victims.
“For the Day of Remembrance 2021, which cannot take place like every year at the” Place of Remembrance “, explains the deputy mayor and councilor for welfare, Maria Angela Ferradini, we searched together with Prof. Antonella Urio, coordinator of the school teachers secondary, a story to tell to our children that talked about their peers. We found a very interesting one, so far little known in the Como area, concerning Lombardy: the story of the children of Sciesopoli, the former fascist colony of Selvino in the province of Bergamo, where about eight hundred Jewish children were hosted, after the end of the Second World War, waiting to leave for their Promised Land: Israel.

Giornata della memora a Cernobbio 2021Enrico Grisanti, whom we met for the occasion and whom, together with Bernardino Pasinelli, we thank for their availability, has a holiday home in Selvino, thanks to which he discovered the charm and magic of this place and, inspired by book by Aharon Megged: “The journey to the Promised Land. The story of the children of Selvino” has made a short documentary that uses styles and languages typical of a story for children to keep the collective memory constantly alive, learning not to forget “.

The Municipal Administration and the Comprehensive Institute of Cernobbio met on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance, Wednesday 27 January 2021, with the third grades of lower secondary schools.
The meeting took place on the school’s online teaching platform with speeches by the head teacher Maria Teresa Callipo, the deputy mayor Maria Angela Ferradini and the director Enrico Grisanti who will “symbolically” deliver to the children a video presenting the history of Sciesopoli, the house dei Bambini di Selvino (BG).
The film was prepared for the occasion by the archivist Bernardino Pasinelli with texts and photos and includes a touching video interview of the Corriere della Sera with Liliana Segre of the journalist Andrea Ferrari, an intervention by Enrico Grisanti and his documentary “Sciesopoli, a place of memory “.

After watching the video on Wednesday, the classes together with their teachers will develop observations and insights that will be the subject of comparison and debate in a new appointment with the authors on Wednesday 10 February. The meeting will also be attended by Maura Sala and Valter Merazzi of the “Slaves of Hitler” of Cernobbio who will be involved in the debate.

At the Municipality of Selvino, in the autumn of 2019 a museum was opened, the MuMeSe (Memorial Museum of Sciesopoli Ebraica – the home of the Children of Selvino), which allows visitors to learn about this incredible story, which can also be explored on website www.sciesopoli.com
