Valeria Dani, PhD candidate in Romance Studies at Cornell University (NY), has been awarded a research grant promoted by the “Fondazione per i Beni Culturali Ebraici in Italia” (Foundation for the Jewish Cultural Heritage in Italy) in 2016. The project chosen by the Foundation is entitled “Trasformazione dello spazio e creazione di comunità. Sciesopoli e i suoi bambini” (Transformation of Space and Creation of Community. Sciesopoli and its Children) and tells the story of the former Fascist colony in Selvino (close to Bergamo).
Between 1945 and 1948, eight-hundred children lived under the protection and care of the Jewish Community in Milan and of the Jewish Brigade, warmly welcomed by the local population that still remembers them dearly. The building, presently abandoned, has been entitled to receive the tutelage of the Ministry of Cultural Activities, Heritage and Tourism both thanks to its architectonical value and as a witnessing symbol of the Jewish presence after the end of WWII. “The research grant on Jewish Italian cultural heritage represents a new initiative supported by the Foundation”, President Dario Disegni explained, “also with the objective of promoting, together with conservation and valorization activities, research opportunities dealing with the broad reality of the Jewish heritage of our country, expressively addressed to young scholars”.
“The Committee”, President Anna Sacerdoti said, “was very interested in Dani’s work for its relevance with contemporaneousness as new light has been shed on the Sciesopoli colony (experienced by the eight-hundred Jewish orphans who survived Shoah before doing aliyah). A new debate has arisen regarding the particularity of the story and on the future use of the building”. Together with Sacerdoti, vicepresident of Fbcei, art historian Dora Liscia and Rabbi Amedeo Spagnoletto were members of the Committee”.
“I got to know about the extraordinary story of Sciesopoli almost one year ago, when Miriam Bisk – one of the founding members of the association for the Selvino children – contacted me for some extensive help with some Italian translations. The precious documents I dealt with suddenly opened my eyes to a deeply significant event, full of aspects that deserve our attention”, recounted Valeria Dani in the presentation of her project. Her study, she then explained, will look at the Sciesopoli experience from a theoretical standpoint – paying particular attention to certain matters, including transformation of the building from a Fascist facility to a shelter for children who survived the Shoah; the creation of a community inside and outside Sciesopoli, where Dani identifies a “sort of workshop” for the life in the kibbutzim in Palestine; the connection with present and contemporary politics, concentrating on various critical theories. Amongst other things, the young scholar will then voice her considerations on what we can learn from the story of Sciesopoli in relation to reception politics that are occupying the contemporary public debate – wondering whether the transformation of space that took place in Sciesopoli can actually be established elsewhere today and, moreover, discovering the profound meaning of this state of abandon that the building has been subjected to for years, discovering what the creation (one that is gradually becoming a reality) of a “Memorial for the Children of Selvino” would mean for the politics of memory and for Italian history.

יסופולי, מורשת לשימור
ולריה דני, דוקטורנטית במחלקה ללימודי ספרות ופילוסופיה איטלקית באוניברסיטת קורנל (ניו יורק), היא הזוכה בתחרות שיזמה הקרן למורשת התרבות היהודית באיטליה להקצאת מענק מחקר עבור 2016.
נושא הפרויקט שנבחר ע“י הקרן הינו “תמורות במרחב והתהוותה של קהילה. שיזופולי וילדיה“, ומספר את סיפורה של המושבה הפשיסטית לשעבר בסלבינו, ליד ברגמו.
שם בין השנים 1945 ו– 1948 חיו שמונה מאות ילדים תחת השגחתם של מנהיגי הקהילה היהודית במילאנו וחיילי הבריגדה היהודית, ואשר זכו לקבלת פנים ידידותית מהאוכלוסייה המקומית, אשר עדיין זוכרת אותם בחום.
הבניין, העזוב כיום, קיבל בשנת 2015 את הגנתו של המשרד לתרבות, מורשת ותיירות, הן בזכות ערכו האדריכלי והן כסמל ועדות לנוכחות היהודית לאחר מלחמת העולם השנייה.
“הקריאה למחקר על המורשת התרבותית היהודית באיטליה היא יוזמה חדשה שהושקה על ידי הקרן – אמר היו“ר דריו דיזייני – במטרה לקדם, לצד פעולות שימור ושיפור, הזדמנויות ללימוד וחקר המורשת היהודית העשירה של ארצנו, והיא מיועדת בעיקר לחוקרים צעירים“.
“הוועדה” – הוסיפה הנשיאה אנה זצ‘רדוטי – “מצאה את המחקר המוצע על ידי דני כמעניין באופן מיוחד עקב הרלוונטיות שלו להווה. המחקר שופך אור חדש על המושבה בשיזופולי והתנסותם של 800 הילדים היתומים היהודיים ששרדו את השואה (טרם העלייה).
המחקר דן בסיפור יוצא הדופן ובשימוש העתידי של הבנין“.
יחד עם הגב‘ סצ‘רדוטי, סגנית הנשיא של קרן FBCEI (הקרן למחקר), נמנים על חברי הוועדה הפרופ‘ להסטוריה של האומנות גב‘ דורה לישה, והרב אמדיאו ספאניולטו.
“התוודעתי לסיפור יוצא הדופן של שיזופולי לפני כשנה, כאשר מרים ביסק – אחת מחברי ועד המייסדים של ארגון ילדי סלבינו – התקשרה אלי בקשר לעבודת תרגום לאיטלקית. בקוראי את המסמכים היקרים שהגיעו אלי, הרגשתי מייד כי מדובר באירוע משמעותי מאוד, הראוי למירב תשומת הלב שלנו, מכל היבט אפשרי” – ציינה ולריה דני במצגת הפרויקט שלה.
מחקרה, כך הסבירה, יתייחס לשיזופולי מתוך נקודת מבט פילוסופית, תוך שימת דגש מיוחד על היבטים מסוימים, לרבות הפיכת המבנה ממקום פשיסטי למרכז לילדים ניצולי שואה; יצירת קהילה בתוך שיזופולי ומחוצה לה, שבו דני מזהה “סדנת הכנה” לחיי קיבוץ בפלשתינה; הקשרים עם ההווה והמדיניות העכשווית, תוך התמקדות בסוגיות פוליטיות שונות.
בין השאר, החוקרת הצעירה תעלה את מחשבותיה בנוגע למה שאנו יכולים ללמוד מסיפור שיסופולי, תוך התייחסות לקבלת מדיניות הנתפשת בשיח הציבורי ומתוך תהייה באם המרתו של מרחב, כפי שהתבצע בשיסופו לי, יכול להתבצע כיום גם במקום אחר. בנוסף על כך, לחשוף את המשמעות העמוקה של מצבו הנטוש והעזוב של המבנה במשך שנים, ולגלות מהי משמעות הפיכת המקום ל “אתר זכרון לילדי סלבינו” (דבר שהופך בהדרגה למציאות) עבור מדיניות של הנצחת זכרון ועבור ההסטוריה של איטליה.
