SELVINO-SCIESOPOLI, 1945-1948: A UNIQUE WORLD HISTORY

After the Shoah the return to life.
More than 800 Jewish orphaned children survived the extermination camps, devastated in the body and spirit, in Selvino they have regained the pleasure of life, play, and school.

Location of memory
Sciesopoli after the Second World War, it was a refuge and rehabilitation and educational center for more than 800 children. The building, built in the 1930s by Arch. Vietti Violi, hosted the fascist colony of Selvino. Sciesopoli welcomed in the arms of those 800 children from Eastern Europe, survivors of the extermination camps and the Shoah, offering care for their rebirth. Those children had been collected in desperate conditions by allied troops on the edge of the concentration camps. The fascist colony, persecutor of the Jews, saw civil redemption. It worked as a training kibbutz and organized for those young people the return to Palestine.
“Sciesopoli” were welcomed, from September 1945, by Moshe Zeiri (Director of Sciesopoli) and instructors and educators of the Jewish Brigade

Many of them, who went to live in Israel in the kibbutz Tzeelim, returned to Selvino in 1983. Then twinning was established between the town of Selvino and the kibbutz Tzeelim. A golden metal plate was attached to the walls of “Scieopoli”: “In this house in Selvino were welcomed in the period 1945-1948 about 800 children and boys escaped to the extermination, who were killed by the ghettos and death camps. Joy of life and trust in the man they had been deprived of, where they learned the language of their ancestors, the language of the Bible, where they were prepared for a new life in their homeland, Israel, where they learned to know and love The generous heart of the Italian people. This plate is dedicated to all those who have contributed to the success of this human and educational work. “In April 2016 this twinning between Selvino and Tzeelim was renewed after some Selvino Children in September 2015 (With sons and grandchildren) returned to Scieopoli, on a grand and exciting conference.

Eshkol (Tzeelim) Most of the Jewish children refugees spent the Selvino “sciexpoli” colony.

“WELCOME” was the motto of democratic and anti-fascist Selvino in response to all forms of racism and anti-Semitism.
After 1948, “Sciesopoli” became a welcoming center for disadvantaged children, there was a public school, they took care of them
The sick ones. So it continued to exist until 1984.

The future of Scieopolis will depend on our memory, our testimonies, and it is therefore important to remember this extraordinary humanity story to children and adults all over the world.
